Gen...I grew up around people of incredible talents. Geniuses in their primary fields, and often as well-rounded as an amateurishly juggled egg. Everyone has varying strengths and weaknesses and mental farts in all aspects of life. And knowledge gaps! To learn all things is not possible, yet we chuckle when someone exposes themselves ignorant of some "common" fact. Pinky up, salad fork isn't to be used on the steak (even if the dressing is pretty good on beef), right-not-left-hand rule for electromagnetic fields... My favorite had to be in middle school, when a lass clearly was trying to straighten out a half-heard truth... that one starts measuring, on a ruler, from wherever 0 is marked. Sometimes, there's a bit of extra material to keep the end wearing off from altering accuracy. But what she said was "Do you start measuring from the 0 or the 1?" And promptly turned pink as her brain parsed her own sentence. ^^; Ah, youth.

No hero can withstand the scrutiny that comes with the pedestal. But their stories can endure. Good and bad alike. The lessons from either can be of great benefit. Knowing what has been done before, and the result... that is the benefit of history, and the accumulation of knowledge. It isn't, therefore, wrong to emulate aspects of heroes... but to become them, and never surpass, is an element of tragedy.DannyboyO1https://www.blogger.com/profile/05933084096742800841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1830391594671368089.post-63210991067471859962012-08-09T15:55:50.362-05:002012-08-09T15:55:50.362-05:00I've taken, over the years, rather a strong pl...I've taken, over the years, rather a strong pleasure in terrifically precise language. Condescension puts off far more fools than logic, tragically. On being asked to mind my language, I love to ask "Beg pardon, but I only know the one language. Are you mandating that I learn Spanish now?" or "Is it the word that is the problem, or the act of cursing? And may your entire family line be struck simultaneously by the venereal diseases of every filthy politician you've ever voted for, if you think being offended gives you special privileges of censorship in public."DannyboyO1https://www.blogger.com/profile/05933084096742800841noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1830391594671368089.post-75788871775994149342012-06-18T22:04:37.093-05:002012-06-18T22:04:37.093-05:00I was disgusted when the older gentleman's arg...I was disgusted when the older gentleman's argument devolved into personal attacks against you. It came out of the blue and was completely unnecessary. This explains why he was on the opposite side of the street: small, irrational mind with no logical foundation for his beliefs/actions/character in general. All he could do was judge you based on your hair and his ignorant presumptions.

As for language, precision of language should be everyone's goal. Sometimes the best words to express yourself are those very words that some consider profane. Let's face it...there is nothing more powerful than when you use one of those words at just the right moment. As with any word or expression, when we overuse them, they lose their power.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06150773757236980980noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1830391594671368089.post-4487459639745386532012-06-15T14:33:47.752-05:002012-06-15T14:33:47.752-05:00"...every time one of them 'forgot his ma..."...every time one of them 'forgot his manners' and swore he would turn to me and apologise for the swearing. Very scientific. I also tend to use words like Chicken Nuggets (I actually use this for lots of things), Cheese, flipping (I know obvious) crummy (whatever word happens to come out next). This way you can "get your swear on" and if your kids repeat it people will think it's cute :). George's preferred word of the moment is Buggar. But I don't mind some good old fashioned profanity if the occasion warrants it.Joannahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07737210816207562992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1830391594671368089.post-91242065557074972002012-04-30T21:21:49.243-05:002012-04-30T21:21:49.243-05:00Sorry I din't finish my comment. This is one of those topics we seem to discuss least, yet needs to be addressed first when explaining to someone why it's ok to cope with crises without gods. It's especially important when coming out to excessively pious family members. And if that introspection is ongoing, it seems perfectly reasonable to me to say something like,"First I believed that I believed X, then I believed that I believed Y, and now I believe that I believe X again," and be completely sincere about all of it.Michael Schneiderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13914109435192248358noreply@blogger.com
